Does Stress Cause Malaria?

The geographical location of Nigeria makes it very liable to malaria breakout, and this occurs throughout the year.

Also, there are different myths and opinions about the causes of malaria. Many people believe that stress or prolonged exposure to the sun causes malaria. This is not true. The only thing that causes malaria is the malaria parasite!

Malaria is caused by plasmodium parasites carried by female anopheles mosquitoes, which spread it from person to person.

What is The Role of Stress in This?

After being infected with the parasite, the body’s defence system would try to fight back, but if the body is exposed to stress, it weakens the ability of the immune system to fight, which can lead to a complete breakdown.

When under severe stress, symptoms related to those infected with the parasite, such as tiredness, feeling unwell and lack of appetite, can occur. This doesn’t mean the person has malaria; it just means they need to rest and de-stress.

Self-medication is not an option when you have these symptoms. Check with your doctor or your health insurance provider.

Health insurance in Nigeria has evolved, and citizens are advised to maximise the full potential inherent in the scheme.
